Hundreds already dead – Despite ceasefire: the fighting in Sudan has flared up again

Date:

Fighting between the warring factions in Sudan flared up again after a short time, despite an agreed ceasefire. Eyewitnesses said airstrikes and anti-aircraft fire were heard on Thursday in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum and in the nearby towns of Omdurman and Bahri.

The army and paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced an extension of the ceasefire for 72 hours from midnight earlier on Thursday.

Thousands of civilians managed to escape
The ceasefire was brokered by the US and Saudi Arabia. Thousands of civilians were able to flee, many of them to neighboring Egypt in the north. Several states have evacuated their nationals and other people from the crisis country by plane.

Blink welcomes extended ceasefire
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken tweeted that the US welcomed the announcement that they would extend the ceasefire in Sudan for another 72 hours. “Together with international and regional partners, we call on the parties to pledge to end fighting and ensure unimpeded access for humanitarian aid.”

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly also confirmed on Twitter that the ceasefire in Sudan has been extended. “The UK demands its full implementation by the generals.” British evacuation flights are en route. All UK nationals wishing to leave the country should make their way to the airport as soon as possible to ensure their safety.

Fighting since April 15
Fighting broke out in Sudan on 15 April in the wake of a power struggle between the army and RSF militia. Since then, at least 512 people have been killed, nearly 4,200 injured and hospitals destroyed.

Food distribution is limited. A third of the 46 million inhabitants depend on humanitarian aid.
