The Waiern fire brigade and the horse doctors from Carinthia recently had to carry out an unusual animal rescue. A horse had just climbed up a narrow spiral staircase to the attic.
The veterinarians Georg Ratschitsch and Sabine Heckenbichler of the well-known horse doctors have never experienced anything like this. A Tinker mare had to be rescued from the attic of a haystack in Waiern near Feldkirchen. The adventurous and inquisitive horse climbed a steep and narrow spiral staircase to the floor of the threshing floor to get to the fragrant hay, but then got stuck helplessly.
“There was no chance of getting the horse down the dangerous stairs while it was conscious. For the safety of humans and animals, we eventually had to anesthetize them,” explains Ratschitsch. The volunteer fire brigade in Waiern was asked for support. The firefighters then carefully transported the horse down the narrow spiral staircase using a cable winch and harness. “The mare could be put back in the box, where she slowly woke up.”
The Pferdedocs team is based in St. Veit an der Glan, where the new practice Pfotendocs has recently been opened to also be there for small animals. Veterinarian Georg Ratschitsch has specialized in horses. With Sabine Heckenbichler he travels throughout Carinthia, East Tyrol and parts of Styria. Information: www.pferdedocs.at
