“Climate Goals Missed” – Sound Demo: Activists Protest in Front of Chancellery

Date:

Since the morning hours, Fridays For Future activists have been demonstrating in front of the Federal Chancellery and making “a lot of noise” to draw attention to Austria’s failure to meet climate targets. The sound demo must provide appropriate sound.

With the protest action, Fridays For Future pointed to the government’s “refusal to work”, which was abundantly clear, according to the report from the Federal Environmental Service. “While the people of Austria are waiting for action, Nehammer prefers to spend his time aimlessly at a children’s birthday party and without any direction hitting a children’s rights piñata. The entertainment value is high, but the consequences of the theater are fatal,” says climate activist Klara König.

Sustainable Heat Act and Climate Protection Act
With the current political course, Austria will fall far short of its climate targets and children and young people will be hardest hit. After the publication of the UBA report, a reaction from the Chancellor would have been “the least”.

Proposing measures such as the Sustainable Heat Act and a sound climate protection law would have been a logical next step, say the activists. “For us it is clear: now it will explode! We will go on strike and complain until Nehammer takes action, because it is not a birthday party for children,” says König.

The aforementioned report from the Federal Environmental Agency on “Austrian greenhouse gas emissions by 2050” arrived in the EU in mid-March and contains the so-called WEM scenario (“with existing measures”). This includes existing legislative initiatives, such as the renewable energy expansion targets by 2030 or the end of internal combustion engines by 2035.
