After the assassination attempt on him during the last election campaign before the party conference where he will officially be named as presidential candidate, Donald Trump seems combative. Shortly after the attack, he addressed his followers on his social media platform and described the bloody moments.
First, in a message on Trust Social, the injured Trump thanked the “United States Secret Service and all law enforcement agencies for their rapid response during the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania.” He also wanted to express his condolences to the family of the deceased protester and also to the family of another seriously injured person. “It is unbelievable that something like this could happen in our country.”
At the time, he knew nothing about the shooter; he has since been identified as a 20-year-old Republican. And then Trump describes the terrifying moments he experienced: “I was hit by a bullet that went through the upper part of my right ear. I knew right away something was wrong because I heard a hissing sound, gunfire, and I immediately felt the bullet penetrating the skin. It was bleeding profusely and that’s when I realized what was happening.”
The appearance should only take a few minutes
What happened was that Trump was shot shortly after 6 p.m. local time while the 78-year-old was on stage in Pennsylvania. His performance was only supposed to last a few minutes. As can be seen and heard on videos (see above), three shots are fired from a distance. After the first, Trump grabbed his right ear, and Secret Service rushed in, yelling, “Get down! Get down! Get down!”
Trump dove under the desk. Within seconds, his bodyguards formed a circle around him. Then the confirmation: “Shooter is down!” When the shots stopped, Trump was helped to his feet. As he was about to be taken off the stage, he ordered his bodyguards to wait a moment. He stuck his head out of the crowd, raised his fist and shouted to his followers: “Fight! Fight! Fight!” Blood was streaming down his right cheek.
Biden: “We can’t be like this”
US President Joe Biden called the attempted assassination “sick” in a statement. “It’s sick. It’s one of the reasons we have to reunite this country. We cannot allow this to happen. There is no place for this kind of violence in America. We cannot be this way.”
Biden was “grateful to hear that he (Trump) is safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and everyone who was at the rally.”
His Vice President Kamala Harris warned after the attack of an escalation of violence. “We must all condemn this heinous act and do our part to ensure it does not lead to further violence,” the Democrat said on X.
Attack causes international outrage
The attack also caused international consternation. “I am shocked by the attempted murder,” wrote Chancellor Karl Nehammer. The chancellor wished Trump “a quick and complete recovery. There is no place for political violence in our society!”, the ÖVP politician added.
“I condemn this insane act in the strongest possible terms. I hope that all the circumstances surrounding this attack will be clarified quickly and completely. Everyone who cares about democracy will see it the same way. All the best to Donald Trump, his family and the people of the USA. May reason and prudence determine the fate of all those involved in these difficult times,” Freedom Party leader Herbert Kickl said in a broadcast on Sunday morning.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X: “I am deeply shocked by the shooting at former President Trump’s campaign rally.”
French President Emmanuel Macron described the alleged attack as a “tragedy for our democracies.” Macron said his thoughts were with U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump.
“We are once again witnessing unacceptable acts of violence against politicians,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for more dialogue. Their solidarity and wishes for a speedy recovery went to Trump — “in the hope that in the coming months of the election campaign, dialogue and responsibility can prevail over hatred and violence,” Meloni wrote.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres “clearly condemned” the attack on Trump as an act of political violence, a spokesman said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was “shocked by the alleged assassination attempt.” There is no place for such violence anywhere in the world. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also expressed solidarity with the former US president.
