Interview with Minister Nadia Calviño, today February 3, 2023, on Radio Euskadi

Date:

The Minister of Economy and Digital Transformation assures that the cooperation with the Basque government is “very good” and that today’s meeting with the lehendakari aims to articulate “the second phase of the plan” for recovery funds.

The First Vice President of the Spanish Government and Minister of Economy and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calvinohas assured that the Basque government “already has direct management” of the firsts €850 million of the European NEXT recovery funds and added that it manages them “completely normal”. Precisely, during the last appearance (October 2022) before the Basque Parliament of the Minister of Economy and Finance, Pedro Azpiazu, he estimated the funds received at 785 million.

In an interview for Radio Euskadi’s “Boulevard” program ahead of meeting with Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu, the minister stressed that cooperation between the two governments in this area is “very good” and that there is “joint management” between the two, despite the Basque executive’s complaints about the lack of direct management.

Calviño explained that today’s meeting with the lehendakari focuses on “how to articulate the second phase of the plan”, that is, “deployment with European loans and part of the transfers to strengthen the Pertes (strategic projects) “.

According to the first vice-president, the management of European funds is “a country plan, so it is not about distributing the money and letting each community do its own projects, but about the whole of Spain embarking on a process of modernization and transformation” . As he emphasized, “it is very important to avoid inconsistencies”.

When asked about the impact of the rise in Euribor on the mortgages and in the economy of households, the minister appreciates the “code of good practice” signed with the banks and believes that financial institutions “must contribute, for their own interest but also for their reputation”. However, he has stated that hedging the price of mortgages would “jeopardize financial security”.

Finally about the coalition government between PSOE and Unidas Podemos, Calvino has made a “very positive balance”. Referring to the Purple Coalition’s demands on several points, he believes all “constructive proposals are welcome and should be analysed”, although he has called for “lowering his tone and avoiding tensions”.
