The EU is investigating Renfe to assess whether it has broken its competition rules by refusing data to competitors

Date:

The company is under fire for allegedly refusing all of its real-time content to competing ticketing platforms to prevent them from competing with its own channels.

The European Commission has opened an investigation to assess whether Renfe has abused its dominant position in the Spanish rail passenger market by refusing to provide all of your content of its range of tickets, discounts and options, as well as real-time data related to its rail passenger services to competing platforms ticket sales.

Renfe currently offers its content and data in real time on your own websites and apps, but Brussels fears it may have refused to allow third-party ticketing platforms direct access to all this information, so they prevent platforms from competing with Renfe’s own direct digital channels to the detriment of consumers.

These platforms present offers from different railway companies and provide customers with online search, comparison, booking and payment services and need to access Renfe’s full content and real-time data to tailor their offers to customer needs.

If this is shown, Renfe may be in breach of EU competition rules prohibit abuse of dominant position. The Community Executive is now preparing to conduct a detailed investigation as a matter of priority.
