A fuel tank caught fire on the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea annexed by Russia. The port city of Sevastopol was probably attacked by a Ukrainian drone. According to Governor Mikhail Rasvozhayev, an area of 1,000 square meters is on fire, with no threat to civilian facilities.
Nothing is known about injuries yet. According to the Tass news agency, 18 fire engines are in operation. Due to the size of the blaze, it could take many hours to bring the blaze under control, Governor Rasvozhayev wrote on Telegram on Saturday.
“The fire does not affect Sebastopol’s fuel supply. These reserves were not used for gas station deliveries,” the company said. It is therefore likely a fuel depot used by the military.
Not an isolated case
The fire was probably started by a drone attack. There have been repeated drone incidents in various parts of the peninsula, some of them causing serious damage, injuries and deaths.
The Ukrainian government has announced several times that it will liberate Crimea, which was annexed in 2014, from Russian occupation. This forces the enemy to increase military effort to defend the Black Sea Peninsula.
