Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made his first public appearance on Saturday since his illness. On Tuesday evening he had to cancel a live interview on television, after which he canceled several campaign dates.
The reason given by the Turkish president was a gastrointestinal virus. During the interview late on Tuesday evening, suffocating noises could be heard in the background, after which the broadcast was interrupted. After a short break, Erdogan, 69, reappeared on screen saying he had stomach problems and apologized for the inconvenience.
He should be better now. On Saturday, television footage showed the 69-year-old attending an air show at Istanbul’s old Ataturk Airport. It is considered “the largest in the world” according to the government and is used by the Turkish military industry to showcase their aircraft and drones.
Bad polls
Before his illness, Erdogan had made numerous campaign appearances due to declining polls. They are currently predicting a neck-and-neck race in the presidential election on May 14 with opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu or even victory for the Social Democratic challenger.
Some three million Turks abroad have been able to vote since Thursday. According to the Turkish embassy, about 108,000 people are eligible to vote in Austria. In the last presidential and parliamentary elections, however, only 49 percent exercised their right to vote.
