A nearly three meter long boa gave birth to 42 proud snake babies at a reptile house in Germany. “Because she was getting fatter, the birth had to be initiated,” says Peter Kisser, who runs the reptile house in Unteruhldingen on Lake Constance.
The baby boom came as a big surprise to him and his associates. “We expected 20 to 30 cubs, which would be normal for such a snake species,” said the expert.
“Snake babies are very independent”
But on April 13, more and more boys were born at the zoo on Lake Constance. According to Kisser, the boa constrictor no longer has to care for its offspring. “Snake babies are very independent, they only spend a few hours with their mother and then they can fend for themselves.”
“From day one, they know exactly what they can eat and who their enemies are.” According to Kissers, the baby boas, which measure about 12 inches (30 centimeters) long, are fed on tiny mice — one per snake.
