After deadly attack – Italy is now considering contraception for female bears

Date:

The discussions about the bears in Trentino continue. Italy’s environment minister, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, spoke out on Saturday in favor of sterilizing female bears to help contain the growing population. Sterilizing animals would remove the need to kill bears to reduce populations through birth control. The minister argued that the aggressive behavior of female bears with cubs would also be banned.

“We may also consider moving the bears if the conditions are right. Of course, this cannot happen overnight, it is a road we have to walk and it will take several years,” the environment minister said, according to the media.

Another decision to kill a problem bear
Trentino Governor Maurizio Fugatti signed a new decree on Thursday to kill the problem bear “JJ4” aka “Gaia” trapped in an animal shelter. The integrity of citizens must be safeguarded as a precaution, Fugatti stressed. However, the regulation will not be implemented immediately, but from May 11, when the administrative court in Trento has made a decision on the shooting. Animal rights groups announced an appeal against the governor’s new ordinance.

There is currently a debate about the possible transfer of bears from Trentino. The province of Trento has repeatedly indicated that there is a surplus of about 60 bears. There is talk of creating corridors for the spread of predators to different Alpine regions. However, Veneto president Luca Zaia ruled out that his region would be ready to welcome Trentino bears.

Animal rights activists demonstrate against killing
Three weeks ago, a 26-year-old jogger was found dead on a forest path in the Caldes commune of Trentino, in a valley (Val di Sole) popular with hikers and tourists. A female bear that had attracted attention several times had killed the man. It is the sister of the problem bear “Bruno”, who was shot in Bavaria in 2006. After an attack in 2020, the bear should have been killed, a court ruled against the murder. The bear was captured last week and is in an animal protection center in Casteller near Trento. Some 300 animal rights activists demonstrated in front of the center against the killing of the bear last Sunday.
