Cyclists will in future be allowed to turn right at a total of 170 red traffic lights in Vienna. This should reduce traffic conflicts in the future. The relevant traffic lights are already signposted with an extra arrow.
Cyclists can use the arrow to turn or continue straight on, even when the traffic light is red. This is an option, you can still wait for the green light. The traffic sign is placed at the red traffic light – it can also be on the opposite side of the street.
Allowed only with extra plate
The traffic sign indicates whether it is possible to turn right or to drive straight ahead at a red light. Running a red light is only allowed at intersections with this extra sign. In any case, it is not allowed to drive straight on, but a stop is mandatory. Pedestrians must also be taken into account.
Already in October, immediately after the entry into force of the new Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), Vienna had made it possible to turn right in the first ten places. In particular, places have been chosen where there are bicycle traffic facilities before and after the exit, so you go from one cycle path to the other.
system is being expanded
The city wants to continue to expand legal right turns on a large scale, according to a broadcast on Sunday. The locations, population and districts proposed by the magistrate were examined in detail beforehand.
“Together with the further consistent expansion of the cycle paths, in which we are again investing more than 25 million euros this year, turning right on a red light makes cycling in Vienna even more attractive because it shortens waiting times and ensures rapid progress,” said the responsible councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ).
