Well, meal! As shown in the video above, a South Korean student ate a banana that was part of an installation by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul.
“I skipped breakfast and was hungry,” the student justified himself, Italian media reported on Monday. The artwork, titled ‘Comedian’, part of Cattelan’s ‘We’ exhibition, consisted of a ripe banana taped to a wall in the museum.
After eating the fruit, the student taped the bowl to the wall. Later, the museum placed a new banana in the same place.
Happens over and over
The management of the museum has announced that it will not be submitting any claims for damages against the student. The banana on display is said to be replaced every two or three days anyway. The installation was also shown in other museums and at Art Basel in Miami.
And there too it was eaten by an action artist in 2019.
resistance to authority
The student later told South Korean media that he saw Cattelan’s work as a rebellion against a certain authority. When the artist learned of the incident, he said, “It’s no big deal at all”.
Maurizio Cattelan is considered the great provocateur of the art world. The ironically funny works of the New York-based Italian regularly make headlines. The 62-year-old has exhibited his works several times at the Venice Biennale and in museums, earning him millions at auctions.
