The Dutch port city of Rotterdam is currently being rocked by explosions and arson attacks. The 50th attack this year was counted on Monday evening. Settlements in the drug world are suspected.
Several explosions have caused unrest in recent days, Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said in a video message on Monday. “I want you to know that we take this situation very seriously and are working with police and prosecutors to do everything we can to keep our city safe.” Two hours later, however, another attack on a coffee shop took place. According to public broadcaster NOS, 50 attacks have been committed so far this year. That’s more explosions than last year.
No one has been injured so far. The explosives or incendiaries deposited at the entrances of houses, facades or shops usually cause damage to property. On Sunday evening, police reported another arrest in connection with the latest five blasts. It involves a foiled attack and shots fired at a building two blocks from the city. A 14- and a 15-year-old suspect had already been arrested. The youths could have been hired as accomplices for the attacks.
Link to drug interception?
In March, the mayor of the city council said that the wave of attacks was the result of the successful interception of drugs in the port of Rotterdam, NRC reports. This would increase unrest between rival gangs, which are increasingly targeting the innocent relatives of rivals. The investigators seized nearly 47 tons of cocaine in the port last year. That’s more than ever.
