Children on the boat – drama on the high seas: 300 refugees rescued

Date:

The rescue ship Geo Barents, operated by the aid organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), has rescued 300 people who had become adrift on a wooden boat in Maltese waters. Women and children were also on board the boat, MSF reported Tuesday.

The aid organization Alarm Phone reported that another 36 migrants were on a boat in Maltese waters.

“Failure to provide assistance by the Maltese authorities”
“A merchant ship was on site but departed without offering assistance: yet another case of Maltese authorities’ failure to provide assistance,” tweeted Alarm Phone.

The Italian naval ship Vega has now arrived in the port of Reggio Calabria with 491 migrants on board. Among the migrants who arrived were 104 women and 24 children. They were housed in a refugee center.

The rescue ship Ocean Viking of aid organization SOS Mediterranée has rescued 168 shipwrecked people in three missions, including 24 minors. The Italian authorities designated Civitavecchia near Rome as the landing port. The ship must arrive in Civitavecchia by Wednesday at the latest.

Aid groups have accused Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government of moving rescue ships to northern ports to limit the number of times they can be deployed in the Mediterranean.
