Ugandan Minister of Labor and Industrial Relations, Charles Okello Engola, was shot dead on Tuesday morning. According to the police, Engola was killed by his bodyguard.
Initially, nothing was known about the motive. The bodyguard reportedly fired several shots at Engola at close range as he left his home in a suburb north of Kampala, police spokesman Fred Enanga said.
The minister was killed instantly, while the bodyguard first fled the scene and later shot himself in a hair salon.
Assassinations of members of the government and other senior figures are rare in Uganda. As Secretary of State, Engola was Deputy Secretary of Labor Betty Amongi.
