Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized another oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. It was the second incident in Tehran in recent days. About a week ago, the regime arrested a tanker in the Gulf of Oman and diverted it to Iranian coastal waters.
Tehran said it was in retaliation after the US seized a tanker carrying Iranian oil. According to the US Navy stationed in the region, the tanker Niovi arrested on Wednesday was en route from Dubai to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.
Several IRGC speedboats surrounded the Panamanian-flagged tanker (see video above) and diverted its course to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, the US Navy reported.
Frequent incidents with tankers
In the past, there have been repeated incidents involving tankers in the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. This caused some violent political tension. In particular, the Strait of Hormuz, an approximately 55 kilometer wide strait between Iran and Oman, is considered one of the most important shipping routes for global oil exports.
