“Turbulent Night” – The next Russian tank farm is on fire

Date:

In Russia, strategically important infrastructure is increasingly going up in flames. Drones destroyed another fuel depot. Ukraine admits planned attacks – without taking responsibility for the recent attacks.

In southern Russia, a major fire broke out in a tank farm for the third time in a short time. The fire near the Crimean peninsula was started by a drone strike, Russia’s state agency TASS reported Thursday morning, citing rescue workers. The tank farm of an oil refinery in the village of Ilski near the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in southern Russia was hit.

“A second turbulent night for our rescue services,” Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev wrote on Telegram. A similar incident had occurred the night before in the Volna settlement, about 50 kilometers away, in the Taman district, which is also in southern Russia’s Krasnodar region.

There, too, a fuel reservoir caught fire near the Crimean bridge and the Russian authorities also cited a drone attack as the cause. On the outskirts of Volna is a large transshipment terminal for oil and oil products, which are then shipped across the Black Sea.

Drone attacks are on the rise
Attacks on strategically important infrastructure in Russia have recently increased. A fuel depot in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, was set on fire last weekend. According to Russian information, ten tanks with a capacity of some 40,000 tons were destroyed by a drone strike in the Crimean port of Sevastopol on Saturday. In the western Russian region of Bryansk, two freight trains derailed shortly after each other after explosions. Drone attacks were also involved in these cases.

Ukraine rarely admits attacks on Russian territory. However, Ukrainian military leaders have admitted that attacks on supply routes and military logistics are part of preparations for a long-awaited counter-offensive.

British secret services see a weakness in the Russian army in tank depots near the Russian-Ukrainian border. London suspects the frequency of these attacks will have consequences: Moscow will likely be forced to reorganize its logistics and better protect or store the fuel in less threatened areas, it said.

Russia bombed Odessa
During the night, Russia mainly targeted the port city of Odessa in new heavy drone strikes against Ukraine. “The enemy sent 15 Shahed-131/136 (Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles) towards Odessa at night,” the southern command of the Ukrainian armed forces said on Thursday.

Twelve drones were shot down, three caused a fire in a dormitory, which was quickly extinguished without casualties. According to the air force, 18 of the 24 drones targeting Ukraine were shot down.
