Sudanese army and RSF break ceasefire with new battle against Khartoum

Date:

The leaders of the two groups agreed to a seven-day ceasefire between May 4 and May 11, but broke it hours after it came into effect.

The Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) staged fighting in the capital Khartoum hours after it came into effect a ceasefire which should stand for seven days. The events come amid the failure of similar initiatives since fighting broke out on April 15 between the two forces during talks to advance the transition process.

The Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces and Chairman of the Sovereign Transitional Council, Abdelfatá al Burhan, and the leader of the RSF, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, gave their “in principle” approval to conclude a ceasefire last Sunday between May 4 and May 11, April 30, as announced by the government of South Sudan.

This has been stated by the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs it will be hard to end the fighting, as both sides seem inclined to “move on”.

The Sudanese armed forces have said in a published statement that the RSF attacked their positions in the capital. For its part, the RSF has criticized the irresponsible actions of the leaders of the coup forces in violating the humanitarian ceasefire. “They attacked our troops in several places,” they stressed.

Hostilities erupted on April 15 as the RSF prepared to integrate into the armed forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition open following the overthrow of Al Bashir, damaged by the coup. October 2021 edition.
