Biontech co-founder Özlem Türeci (56) has been awarded the Jung Prize for Medicine for her research in the field of immunology and mRNA technology. For example, she contributed to the first approved vaccine against Covid-19 and to new, personalized treatments for cancer patients.
According to the jury’s statement, she brought these treatment options into clinical development. The prize comes with an amount of 300,000 euros. In addition, Leipzig physician Achmed Mrestani (31) as a young researcher and Kiel molecular biologist Stefan Rose-John (68) were honored for his life’s work on Thursday. Mrestani studies the causes and treatment methods of epilepsy and headache disorders at Leipzig University Hospital. He received 210,000 euros to finance his research project over the next three years.
Rose-John works in the fields of oncology and inflammatory medicine. According to the jury’s statement, his research has already enabled the development of new drugs and therapeutic approaches and promises to continue to provide direct benefit to patients in the future. In addition to the Gold Jung Medal for Medicine, the scientist receives a grant of 30,000 euros, which he can award to a junior researcher of his choice.
Winners talk about work on Friday
On Friday, the two prize winners and the prize winner will talk about their research and present their results. The Jung Foundation for Science and Research, based in Hamburg, was founded in 1967 by the entrepreneur Ernst Jung. The three medical awards are presented annually.
