It is now scientifically undisputed that an infection with the coronavirus can also have long-term health consequences – but a new study from Denmark now shows how serious these can be. For example, the risks of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or a stroke have multiplied.
As the research learns more and more about the far-reaching consequences of corona, the evaluation of the data of about a million Danes is ringing alarm bells: the risk of Alzheimer’s is increased by 350 percent, Parkinson’s by 260 percent and 270 percent of strokes and for bleeding in the brain by as much as 480 percent.
Until now, it was clear that Covid-19 must be associated with neurological symptoms, but it was unclear whether Covid-19 also affects the incidence of certain neurological diseases, explains the study’s lead author Pardis Zarifar from Righospitalet in Copenhagen. . That has now been clearly demonstrated.
Don’t underestimate the risk of stroke
The risk is much higher than for those people who have not contracted Covid-19 – but so are other respiratory diseases or the flu. However, for comparison it also turned out: a 1.7-fold increased risk of stroke compared with admitted patients older than 80 years with influenza or bacterial pneumonia.
However, the frequency of other nervous disorders such as multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré syndrome and narcolepsy did not increase after Covid-19, flu or pneumonia.
