A Western Ukrainian has flouted sanctions against Russia and sold luxury cars to wealthy oligarchs. As reported by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the businessman from Lviv (Lviv) exported the vehicles via Belarus to the country that attacked his homeland more than a year ago. It concerns about 45 cars with a value of more than three million euros, including luxury cars from Maybach and Rolls-Royce.
The West Ukrainian lived in Russia before and apparently still had good connections from that time. His wealthy clients included top executives from Gazprom and the Russia Today propaganda channel. The man bought the luxury vehicles from Ukrainian car dealers, registered them with his companies and then shipped them to Russia via Belarus. In this way, international trade restrictions were circumvented.
Assets worth nearly 17 million euros seized
The transit through the European Union is said to have been carried out partly with forged documents. As part of the investigation, the secret service seized almost 17 million euros in assets. Among them were 22 apartments in Kiev and Lviv and another 40 luxury cars. The man now faces up to 12 years in prison for supporting the aggressor state.
The Russian army invaded Ukraine more than 14 months ago. After Western sanctions were imposed, most automakers withdrew from Russia.
