Thief caught thanks to GPS – bike “borrowed”: stolen iPhone as collateral

Date:

Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, a brutal thief was exposed in Innsbruck: the suspect – a Bulgarian (20) – borrowed a resident’s bicycle and left him a new iPhone as a “deposit”. But the 20-year-old did not return. Instead, a German who owns the smartphone suddenly appeared – he was able to locate his mobile phone via GPS. The alleged bicycle thief was eventually convicted in the same way.

His good faith was fatal to the 24-year-old Rotterdammer on Saturday evening. He lent his bicycle to the young Bulgarian whom he had previously met in a park in Innsbruck. The 20-year-old gave the owner a new iPhone as a “promise”.

Mobile phone owners appeared at Tiroler
The problem with that: the Bulgarian didn’t come back on the bike. Instead, the local resident met a 27-year-old German. He confronted him and stated that he could find his iPhone here. “The 27-year-old finally managed to convince the Austrian that the mobile phone was actually his mobile phone,” the police said.

But things get even weirder: Based on the location data, the German could see where his device had been during the night. The 24-year-old resident was also able to track the location of his bike using a tracking device attached to his bike.

Suspect was ‘intercepted’
Together with two friends, the Tyrolean eventually succeeded in locating and intercepting the fugitive Bulgarian. The alerted police eventually arrested the suspect. “IDuring a first interrogation, the Bulgarian did not confess, “said the detectives. The alleged perpetrator is set free. Further investigations are underway.
