The dissatisfaction of the German population is also reflected in the latest survey data. And they will probably be frightening for the SPD, Greens and FDP, but also for the opposition CDU/CSU: the right-wing populist AfD is already the strongest party in East Germany.
In a special evaluation of the weekly Sunday trend by “Bild am Sonntag” and the opinion trend by “Bild”, the party now has 26 percent in the East German states excluding the capital Berlin. This puts the AfD well ahead of the Union, which has 23 percent. The SPD is 20 percent, the Greens reach ten percent and the FDP eight percent. The left comes in the east at nine percent. The other parties secured 4% of the vote.
For Sunday demand in the East, data from the last three Sunday trends between mid-April and early May were cumulated with those from the last two “Bild” opinion trends. The resulting number of cases in Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia was 1009 respondents.
The left would miss access to the Bundestag
The CDU/CSU is currently in first place nationally with 28 percent of the vote, followed far behind by the SPD with 20 percent. The Greens (14 percent) have now been pushed out of third place by the AfD (16 percent). The FDP gained nine percent in the latest “Bild am Sonntag” Sunday trend. It is also interesting that the left would currently miss the five percent threshold for joining the Bundestag.
But what makes the Alternative for Germany so strong in the East? Hermann Binkert, head of the opinion research institute INSA, cites, among other things, historical reasons in an interview with “Bild am Sonntag”. In the east of the country, for example, not such strong party ties developed. In addition, East Germans reject Ukraine’s NATO accession, corona measures and immigration more than other German citizens.
