Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger announced his resignation on Sunday. He apparently prevented a resignation by President Zuzana Čaputová.
“After talking to my colleagues, assessing the political reality and most importantly what is best for Slovakia, I decided that conflict-traumatized Slovakia did not deserve to endure the political crisis for another day,” Heger explained to journalists in Bratislava. .
Apparently Čaputová did not accept his “alternative solutions” to the crisis that arose after the ministers resigned. This includes filling vacant cabinet posts with your chosen experts. He also offered the alternative of no longer running the government himself.
A cabinet of experts should be established
Now on Tuesday, Čaputová is expected to appoint a cabinet of experts that will lead the country to new elections in September. According to media reports, Ľudovít Ódor, currently deputy governor of the Slovak central bank NBS, should be appointed as Heger’s successor.
Agriculture minister Samuel Vlčan only resigned on Friday because of a corruption scandal. Surprisingly, Foreign Minister Rastislav Káčer also threw in the towel.
Transitional government since 2022
Slovakia has had only one caretaker government since last year, after the eurosceptic liberal party SaS (Freedom and Solidarity) left the centre-right government and stripped it of its parliamentary majority. The background was the ongoing conflict with Olano boss Igor Matovič, whose resignation as head of government the SaS had forced. Since a no-confidence vote was lost in December, the Heger cabinet has been in office only on an acting basis.
