Serbian education minister Branko Ružić has resigned four days after the fatal shooting at a primary school in Belgrade. After the massacre in Belgrade, more bloody crimes took place in three villages about 50 kilometers southeast of the capital. A 21-year-old man shot people with an automatic rifle, killing eight of them. Now the government in Belgrade wants to tighten gun laws.
“As a responsible and well-behaved person, I tender my irrevocable resignation as education minister,” Ružić wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Ana Brnabić published on Twitter on Sunday. The 47-year-old socialist initially blamed the internet, video games and “Western values” for a 13-year-old’s act on Wednesday. The opposition, human rights organizations and thousands of protesters then demanded his resignation.
President speaks of “terrorist act”
Most of the victims were buried last weekend. More funerals will follow on Monday. The 21-year-old suspect, believed to be responsible for the deaths of eight people and injuring 14, was held in police custody for 48 hours. He must be questioned by an investigating judge by Sunday afternoon at the latest. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic described the bloody act as a “terrorist act”, a qualification experts doubt, and a motive for the act is still unknown.
The 13-year-old, who allegedly killed eight classmates and a security guard at primary school on Wednesday and injured seven other people, was in hospital. His father, who is said to have taught him how to shoot, was sentenced to 30 days in pre-trial detention after questioning on Friday. The doctor and gun collector risks up to twelve years in prison for “serious danger to public safety”.
Classes start again on Monday
Classes will resume on Monday at Vladislav Ribnikar’s primary school. Although school staff, students and their parents received psychological help in recent days, many felt insecure.
