Shock during a Sunday family outing in Hallstatt in Upper Austria: Four-year-old Michael climbed off an avalanche barrier in an unguarded moment and got stuck on a boulder. The mountain rescue team had to turn out to rescue their youngest patient from the life-threatening situation.
According to a report from the Hallstatt mountain rescue service, the mother was initially very upset. No wonder: her four-year-old son Michael made his way alone from the Knappenhaus in the direction of the mountain station of the cable car in an unguarded moment. The whole family of six from the Melk district with four children between the ages of one and eight used the Sunday for a trip to Hallstatt.
Once the little boy had reached the top station when he escaped, he climbed down behind the building to the avalanche barrier. “The terrain is steep and dangerous there,” Dieter Eder, head of the Hallstatt mountain rescue service, told the “Krone”. The toddler was hanging from a boulder and could not move forward or backward.
Brave adults provide first aid
A 22-year-old woman from Linz and her companion discovered the four-year-old in his predicament around 2 p.m. They informed the cable car workers, who immediately initiated the rescue chain and stopped the cable car operation. The young woman and her companion courageously descended about 100 feet towards the boy and helped him to a somewhat safer position. The two adults and little Michael had to wait there for about 20 minutes until the mountain rescuers arrived.
“We immediately gave the child a helmet and encouraged a lot,” says chief of operations Michael Gruber (44). “Then we stretched a rope railing and helped the boy up.” Finally, the parents were able to hug their son unharmed again.
In good spirits despite the rescue
The four-year-old survived the unplanned climb well in all respects. When the first rescuer arrived, he is said to have hung up and asked, “Why are you wearing such a clean shirt?” And when he was safe again, he was already planning for the future: the next time he goes off-road , he must wear work trousers said the cheerful boy.
For the Hallstatt mountain rescue team, the mission, which was ultimately unspectacular, was something very special: “We’ve never had such a young patient,” says operations manager Gruber.
