More than 200 cases – brutally exploited: on the trail of the exploiters

Date:

For years, more than 200 people have been mercilessly exploited by a corrupt entrepreneurial couple as false self-employed. AK and unions stand up and demand money back.

They worked in gastronomy, at gas stations, in football stadiums or on construction sites. Long working days of up to 6 pm were not uncommon. Over the years, a German citizen and an Austrian have loaned over 200 people from third countries to numerous well-known companies across the country through their (now insolvent) company. The allegations weigh heavily: exploitation, alleged human trafficking and organized bogus self-employment.

Gross hourly wage of 9.50 euros
The workers were insured as self-employed, but were in fact anything but self-employed. The mostly male asylum seekers from Iraq worked as normal workers. But they only got a pittance of 9.50 euros. Far below the minimum wage. However, SHG’s customers were also direct beneficiaries. According to contracts held by AK Vienna, various customers paid between EUR 14.50 and EUR 16.50 per hour worked.

Particularly brutal: if the employees fell ill or wanted a holiday, they were immediately threatened with dismissal! Unlawful lump sums for transport and accommodation have also been deducted, as well as unspecified advances.

Tougher punishments were needed as a deterrent
There is now support from the Vienna Workers’ Chamber and the trade union PRO-GE. Those affected are bringing their claims against the workers with the support of worker advocacy groups. Although the discovered case is serious, according to AK labor law expert Ludwig Dvorák, it is only the tip of the iceberg.
