Protest against Russia – Poland: Ambassador prevented wreath laying

Date:

In the Polish capital of Warsaw, protesters stopped the Russian ambassador from laying a wreath at a cemetery for Soviet soldiers to mark “Victory Day” against Nazi Germany. When Sergei Andreyev got out of his limousine on Tuesday, he was immediately surrounded by demonstrators.

As images on social media show, the diplomat was called “racists” – a mix of “rashya”, as Russia is pronounced in English, and fascist. “Rashya” has been used in Ukraine since the beginning of the war for the Russian occupiers. Last year, the Russian diplomat in Warsaw was doused with red liquid by demonstrators on May 9 (see photo below).

The path to the mausoleum cemetery was lined with numerous crosses with Ukrainian flags on them. There were also tall cardboard buildings with the names of destroyed Ukrainian cities. Since Andreyev just got stuck, he laid the wreath in front of the Ukrainian flags and drove off.

Mausoleum containing the remains of over 20,000 soldiers
On May 9, Russia commemorates “Victory Day” over Nazi Germany. The mausoleum cemetery in Warsaw was built a few years after the end of the Second World War and has the character of a large park. The remains of more than 20,000 soldiers who fell in 1944 and 1945 are buried there.
