After 30 years of construction – Italy: Bridge collapsed 6 years after opening

Date:

A highway bridge collapsed in the Italian region of Calabria that was only inaugurated about six years ago. The construction time for the structure was a proud 30 years – a storm caused the end of the construction.

In the past, the region was ravaged by incessant rains. The water masses had led to a landslide on Wednesday. The bridge over the Ortiano 2 highway had connected Longobucco to the Ionian coast, crossing the Trionto River. Fortunately, it was closed to all traffic just before it collapsed.

Politician denounces “shameful situation”.
The bridge was only opened to traffic in 2016. “This is the shameful state Calabria is in,” said Vittoria Baldino of the Five Star Movement. It is about a building that “was under construction for 30 years and has already cost tens of millions of euros”.

Calabria’s president, Roberto Occhiuto, stated: “I will demand that all responsibilities, if any, be identified.” It cannot be the case that in 2023 a bridge that has only been in use for a few years will simply collapse.
