It’s day 443 in Russia’s relentless offensive war. There has been long speculation and waiting – now the Ukrainian counter-offensive could actually have started.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday asked for more time for the counter-offensive and promised the Russians would be in for a “nasty surprise”. On the evening of May 11, pro-military Russian telegrams reported that the time had apparently come.
According to military officer Yevgeny Poddubny, the Ukrainian army has “started conducting an operation to encircle Russian troops” in the direction of Bakhmut. According to him, the Ukrainian forces also managed to make a breakthrough in the area of Soledar.
Oleksandr Kots, also a military officer, writes that Ukrainian tanks have been sighted in Kharkov. He assumes they are on their way to the Russian border. The maneuver could be aimed at pressuring Russian resources – “to stop the threat in the Belgorod region”.
The former head of the defense ministry of the self-proclaimed separatist Donetsk People’s Republic Igor Girkin (aka Igor Strelkov) considers them “local, successful counterattacks”.
On the other hand, the telegram channel “Grey Zone”, which is close to the unscrupulous mercenary group “Wagner”, described the military officers’ reports as “panic out of nowhere”. Initially, there was no comment from Kiev.
