A restaurant on the Naschmarkt automatically charges a tip of ten percent. This caused serious criticism from “Krone” readers.
Christian M. wants to turn his back on the Naschmarkt forever. As reported, he wanted to celebrate his birthday with friends at a restaurant. The nasty surprise: “We were billed for the service. Tips should always reflect satisfaction. For your average service where you have to get up to find the waiter, asking 10 percent is a rip-off.” The owner of the restaurant is right: “Austrians are not used to tipping 10 percent. But our employees earn their living with it. We point this out on the menu and if a guest complains, we take the item off the bill.”
“That’s the Minimum”
The report caused heated debate among the readers of “Krone”. Ö3 moderator Robert Kratky also took the floor and said: “That’s the minimum that thousands of grateful people in our restaurant are entitled to. As long as the innkeepers pass the ten percent 1:1 on to those who earn the money.”
Many readers are convinced that the owner should pay the employees better so that they are not dependent on a lump sum. The mood is certainly heated in view of several entrepreneurial creative awards.
“Host Self-Destructs”
One reader summed it up: “I think that’s really cheeky, you tip voluntarily. I always tip generously when things are going well. That’s how the hosts destroy themselves with greedy inflation and mandatory tips.” It is certain that a service fee is not prohibited, but neither is paying higher salaries.
