The high water level of the Danube led to an accident on the important waterway: as the police reported in an interview with “Krone”, a freight boat had detached itself from a freight ship and then crashed into a pillar of the Floridsdorf bridge. The ship’s crew was only able to catch up with the boat at the height of the Brigittenauer bridge.
Due to the strong current, an unmanned freight ship became detached from a cargo ship on Wednesday. There was property damage and no injuries were reported in the accident. The vehicle first crashed into a pillar of the Floridsdorf Bridge and then drifted further down the river. It also hit a quay wall and damaged it as well,
The boat was floating about a mile away
The marine police left and, according to police spokeswoman Barbara Gass, the ship’s crew was able to regain control of the escaped boat and secure it themselves. This was only possible at the Brigittenauer bridge – the vehicle had therefore moved about a kilometer away. For the police it was just an insurance issue. Traffic on both bridges was not affected by the incident.
On Wednesday, the level of the Danube is expected to rise to such an extent that one can officially speak of a flood. However, the water level is predicted to fall again on Thursday – the MA 45 explained that compared to the “standard”, only a “manageable flood” is to be feared.
