“Titan” drama – First photos show fragments of a mini submarine

Date:

After the drama surrounding the mini-submarine “Titan”, which killed five people, the first salvaged debris has now been unloaded on the Canadian coast. The US Coast Guard and Canadian authorities are investigating the cause of the accident (see video above).

The Canadian Coast Guard vessel “Horizon Arctic” took part in the search mission shortly after the accident. On Wednesday, the ship entered the port of St. John’s on the Canadian island of Newfoundland and unloaded the first salvaged parts of the mini-submarine that imploded during its dive to the wreckage of the Titanic.

Rubble just 500 meters from “Titanic”
After days of searching, the first pieces of debris were found just 500 meters from the bow of the “Titanic”. Hopes of finding the five men on board alive were immediately dashed. On board the “Titan” were Frenchman Paul-Henri Nargeolet (77), British adventurer Hamish Harding (58), British-Pakistani management consultant Shahzada Dawood (48) and his 19-year-old son Suleman and the head of the Oceangate operating company, Stockton Rush (61), who operated the boat.

When asked whether their bodies could be recovered, there was initially no answer. The US Coast Guard speaks of an “incredibly harsh environment” around the Titanic wreck. Whether she was suggesting that the bodies had been destroyed by the implosion or whether she was referring to difficulties in recovery remained unclear.

However, it is still necessary to establish why this catastrophe happened. According to several experts, the developers and operators of the submarine, the Oceangate company, had circumvented recognized standards and ignored warnings. A former Oceangate employee reportedly raised safety concerns five years ago.

Even the smallest defect was enough
In an implosion, an object suddenly collapses when the external pressure exceeds the internal pressure. It is in the inverse ratio of forces to an explosion. Even the smallest structural defect can cause such a catastrophe at great depths.

The experts now hope to gain insight into this from the pieces of debris that have been discovered. Although personnel and vessels have largely withdrawn from the accident scene, operations on the seabed will continue initially, the US Coast Guard said. The “Titanic” lies at a depth of about 3800 meters on the seabed.
