“Not unusual” – lioness in the zoo in Bavaria ate her own offspring

Date:

It is common knowledge that nature can be cruel – this was impressively demonstrated in the lion enclosure of the Nuremberg Zoo. Lioness “Aarany” recently gave birth to four babies – but she ate three of her cubs shortly after birth. But this behavior is not uncommon, the zoo explains.

The cubs were born last week. The predator house had not been open to visitors in recent weeks to give the pregnant “Aarany” a rest.

Despite these precautions, the birth may have overwhelmed the lioness, as the big cat ate three of her cubs. Another baby had died of natural causes just hours after birth. According to the zoo, his lungs probably weren’t fully expanded.

“Lioness is still inexperienced with the first litter”
“As cruel as that may sound, this behavior is not uncommon for lions,” the zoo said in a Facebook post. “A lioness is inexperienced when she has her first litter. She must first learn how to handle cubs.” It would also happen in nature that raising primiparous lionesses would not work.

However, the zoo is confident that the offspring will be fine next time. “Aarany” and “Kiron” would get along very well. The cubs would make an important contribution to the conservation of the Asiatic lion subspecies, which is classified as ‘endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the zoo said.
