Second round approaches – Erdogan calls on foreign Turks to vote

Date:

Ahead of the second round of Turkey’s presidential election on May 20, incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on Turks abroad to vote: “I urge you to exercise your democratic rights by all means. “

“I expect you, the representatives of our nation abroad, to stand up for your will again,” Erdogan wrote on Twitter on Friday.

Erdogan is likely to hope for a clear majority of votes from abroad again: according to preliminary results, voters abroad voted 57.5 percent for Erdogan in the elections on May 14.

“They have strengthened the power of democracy”
“We successfully completed the first round of voting you participated in with a record voter turnout. Despite all the difficulties, you have fulfilled your civic duty in the best way. You have shown great kindness to me and the Republican Alliance,” Erdogan said on Twitter. “They have strengthened the power of democracy.”

“Each of you has already engraved your name in gold letters in our political history. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the honest, democratic and resilient attitude you have taken. Now we have the second round of the presidential election ahead of us.”

“Successful exam”
“I ask that you exercise your democratic right by closely monitoring election dates in the countries where you are located. I look to you, our nation’s representatives abroad, to vigorously defend your will once again. I sincerely believe that we will successfully pass this test.”

In Austria, after counting 97.14 percent of the ballot boxes, he received just under 72 percent of the vote, in Germany provisionally at 65 percent of the vote.

Voting from Saturday at airports and border crossings
All in all, Erdogan also received the most votes, but just missed the 50 percent needed for a first-round victory. Challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu of the CHP received provisional figures after 45 percent of the vote. Voting abroad and at border crossings, ports and airports in Turkey will be possible from May 20.
