Interview with the local chief – is tourism a curse or a blessing for Hallstatt?

Date:

A community that apparently cannot do without or with its guests: the tourist flow to Hallstatt is so great again after the pandemic that a fence was recently erected to ward off selfie fans. Mayor Alexander Scheutz on the not-so-easy day-to-day life of the World Heritage Region’s 730 locals, favored tourists and “advice-resistant” business people.

Crown: Hallstatt on everyone’s lips again! The failed action with the anti-selfie fence has caused a stir outside the borders. Was that perhaps the intention, Mr. Mayor?
Mayor Alexander Scheutz: (laughs) I don’t think we need that kind of advertising. I didn’t think the whole thing would make such a fuss and that it would even be reported in France. This photo point has been a problem for residents for years and after Corona it escalated. So we wanted to spend a weekend trying out what would happen if the selfie spot didn’t exist. A storm of indignation swept through the place! The fencing did not even convince the immediate neighbours. Now we know: Closing is not a solution either.
