Shops closed, dozens of police officers on the scene, explosive dogs in action: on Friday, two abandoned suitcases caused a large-scale operation at Graz’s main station. Moments later, however, all-clear could be given for the bombing and the owner was eventually found.
Great excitement yesterday in Graz: dozens of police officers had to evacuate all shops and three platforms at the main station. Within a radius of 50 meters around the checkout of the supermarket, everything was cordoned off and explosive dogs were deployed. Public transport was also affected. The reason: two abandoned suitcases, which apparently raised concerns that they contained bombs!
Without purchases: man only puts suitcases down
The assumptions were also fueled by suspicious video material from the surveillance cameras: an unknown person was discovered there who was deliberately on his way to the checkout and deliberately placed the luggage there. He quickly walked back to the entrance – without buying anything – and disappeared.
Two hours later, around 3:45 p.m., it was safe: the suitcases did not contain any explosives. The owner was also found yesterday: a 53-year-old from Graz. The Styrian Marker may have been in a confused state and simply forgot about the case. He is reported on suspicion of disorderly conduct.
Normalcy quickly returned to the main station.
