Temperature record: – 2023 warmest year ever recorded

Date:

According to the American climate agency NOAA, there is a more than 99 percent chance that the current year will be the warmest year since measurements began. NOAA announced that 2023 had already set the record for the period from January to September. Accordingly, June, July, August and September each recorded the highest monthly value. The hottest year to date was 2016.

September in particular stood out. “It was not only the warmest September on record, but also by far the most atypical month in NOAA’s 174 years of monitoring climate,” NOAA chief scientist Sarah Kapnick said, according to the statement.

Record September
The global average temperature in September was 1.44 degrees Celsius above the 20th century average. This was the largest deviation ever measured in a month, NOAA writes.

The EU Climate Change Agency Copernicus recently reported that this month of September was 1.75 degrees warmer than the average temperature for that month in the pre-industrial reference period of 1850 to 1900.

The average temperature in 2023 so far is 1.4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. That is only 0.1 degrees less than the 1.5 degrees set as the climate target of the Paris Climate Agreement, which in the long term should not be exceeded by the end of the century.

The high temperatures all over the world
According to NOAA, September reached record highs for the month in Africa, Europe, the Americas and Antarctica. In the Arctic and Asia, it was the second warmest September since records began. Germany also experienced its warmest September since measurements began, according to a preliminary assessment by the German Weather Service.

The natural climate phenomenon El Niño is currently gaining influence. An El Niño could increase temperatures, which are already steadily rising due to the climate crisis.
