“National duty” – Turks abroad asked to vote again

Date:

Turks abroad can now vote again. That is also their “national duty,” Erdogan challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu said in a speech on Friday evening.

He described the May 28 decision as a referendum that goes beyond elections. In his speech, Kilicdaroglu referred to the referendum in 2018, when the power of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was extended. This gave him more opportunities to control the judiciary. “You saw what happened after the last referendum. This is the last resort for our country,” said the opposition leader.

Erdogan is considered a favorite both nationally and internationally in the run-up to the second round. On May 14, he narrowly missed an absolute majority. It is Turkey’s first presidential election in its history. For his challenger, Erdogan had already called for him to be chosen abroad as well. “I ask that you exercise your democratic right by closely monitoring election dates in the countries where you are located. I look to you, our nation’s representatives abroad, to vigorously defend your will once again. I sincerely believe that we will pass this test successfully,” Erdogan said.

108,000 voters in Austria
In their own country, about 61 million people are called to vote. There are also about 3.4 million eligible voters living abroad, 1.5 million of whom live in Germany alone. In Austria, about 108,000 Turkish citizens have the right to vote. You can cast your vote from next Saturday until May 24th.

Nearly 72 percent of voters in Austria chose Erdogan in the first round, in Germany there were 65.
