In Spiderman Costume – London: Attack on controversial statue of Eric Gill

Date:

A man in a Spiderman mask used a hammer and chisel to attack a statue by controversial sculptor Eric Gill at the BBC’s London headquarters.

On Saturday morning, the man climbed onto scaffolding set up for repairs to the statue that had been attacked earlier and hoisted a banner sharply criticizing the public broadcaster and the police. Initially, the police did not intervene.

Sculpture since 1932 above the entrance
The British sculptor Eric Gill (1882-1940) recorded the sexual abuse of his daughters in his diaries, which were published long after his death. He is also said to have had an incestuous relationship with a sister and attacked the family’s dog. That is why there have recently been repeated calls for the stated statue of the characters Prospero and Ariel to be removed from William Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest”. Gill was considered one of the most famous sculptors of the 20th century.

Exploration to protect statue from vandalism
Last year, a man attacked the factory with a hammer. A few days ago, the BBC announced that the statue is due for renovation due to its historical and cultural importance to the building – despite allegations against Gill. It was planned that in the course of the work, which should be completed by June 19, information about the work and the artist would be added, for example with a QR code nearby.
