A delivery truck sparked a large-scale police crackdown on Lafayette Square near the White House Monday night. The driver of the truck is said to have sent his vehicle into a security fence twice.
“There were no injuries to Secret Service or White House personnel and the cause and course of the accident are still under investigation,” tweeted Anthony Guglielmi, U.S. intelligence chief of communications. The driver has been arrested.
Nearby hotel evacuated
After the first collision, the driver drove into the crash barriers a second time, television station WUSA reports based on an eyewitness account. Some streets and footpaths are closed. The nearby Hay Adams Hotel had been evacuated, Fox 5 reported.
Videos from the search of the vehicle also showed a swastika flag lying on the ground, which had been in the truck (see tweet above). Investigators currently believe that it was an intentional estimate of the barrier.
