Proceedings stopped – rapist murdered: but no prison for victims

Date:

An Indigenous woman in Mexico convicted of killing her rapist has been banned from jail after all. After the 23-year-old was recently sentenced to six years and two months in prison, the responsible judge has now dropped the criminal case at the request of the public prosecutor.

Prosecutors re-examined the case and decided to drop the charges. The 23-year-old was found guilty on May 15 of using excessive force to defend herself against her 2021 rapist.

Accordingly, the woman first knocked the offender unconscious, then strangled him and finally tried to dismember the body. She kept the body for at least 20 hours and then took it out onto the street in a plastic bag.

appeal is still possible
The single mother from the southern state of Oaxaca, who was supported by women’s organizations, was detained for nine months before being released pending trial. Although the case has now been dropped, the dead man’s next of kin can still appeal.
