Brazil’s government has declared a state of animal health emergency after detecting five cases of avian flu in wild birds in two states in the country’s southeast. The regulation has already entered into force and is valid for 180 days, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock said.
Brazil is the world’s largest chicken exporter, so producers have had to step up preventive measures on farms to curb the spread of the disease. The Brazilian government has explained to the main meat import destinations that the preventive measures have already been taken.
So far, five cases of bird flu have been confirmed in wild birds in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, states in the southeast of the country far from the main chicken producing centers, which are concentrated in the south of the country.
Similarly, the Ministry of Health has conducted 33 tests for suspected cases of transmission of avian flu in humans and at this point all have been negative, with the exception of two cases that are still under investigation.
The Agriculture portfolio reminded that the disease is not transmitted through the consumption of meat or eggs, but through contact with sick birds.
Brazil’s Association of Animal Proteins (ABPA) has stressed in a statement that the country maintains “free” status from bird flu, so it expects no impact on chicken exports, which reached $9.762 million in 2022.
