Prominent American Republican Ron DeSantis has announced his intention to run for president of the United States. As governor of the state of Florida, he submitted the necessary documents to the federal election commission on Wednesday.
The request was confirmed by the Washington Post newspaper, citing a spokeswoman for 44-year-old DeSantis.
It was originally reported that DeSantis would announce his plans during a conversation with Twitter boss Elon Musk at 6 p.m. local time.
According to polls, DeSantis, a conservative conservative, is currently considered the Republican Party’s most promising candidate next to Trump, but is well behind the former president. According to a Reuters poll, 19 percent of Republicans plan to vote for him, compared to 49 percent for Trump.
Trump had already announced in November that he would run for president in the 2024 elections. DeSantis has been governor of the southern US state of Florida since early 2019. In November 2022 he was re-elected with a convincing result.
The former president railed against the governor on Wednesday on the platform he co-founded, Truth Social, describing him as “disloyal,” among other things. The presidential election will take place on November 5, 2024. A broad field of participants is expected for the Republicans.
Incumbent US President Joe Biden is running for re-election among the Democrats. As an incumbent, he is unlikely to have serious competition in the party’s internal election campaign. Biden has been in office since January 2021, when he became the oldest president ever elected to the White House.
