Proceedings were launched against the organizer of the academic ball and member of the Vienna state parliament Udo Guggenbichler (FPÖ) on suspicion of reactivation.
The “Standaard” reported on Wednesday that a house search had also taken place at his student association in connection with this. The allegations were made by an acquaintance of Guggenbichler and by former National Council member Martha Bißmann. Guggenbichler denies the allegations.
Raid on Brotherhood
Guggenbichler accused a woman he allegedly brought to the Albia compound compound several times. She told the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence Services (DSN) that there were several Nazi memorabilia there, leading to a search of the house. The Public Prosecution Service in Vienna subsequently initiated proceedings against Guggenbichler on suspicion of recidivism.
An investigation is also underway against another person and unknown perpetrators. Bissmann also accused Guggenbichler. She also reported to the authorities objects and images whose possession should not be allowed under the prohibition law.
Lawyer: ‘The allegations are baseless’
Guggenbichler’s lawyer is convinced that the investigation will prove unfounded. The allegations are fictitious and “baseless”. Guggenbichler reported stalking, but the investigation was dropped.
SPÖ and the Greens demand consequences
“Should the allegations be confirmed and included in the large collection of right-wing extremist incidents in the FPÖ, there should be urgent consequences,” said Sabine Schatz, SPÖ spokeswoman for culture of remembrance. Green youth spokeswoman Barbara Neßler and green Viennese councilor Viktoria Spielmann believed that Guggenbichler should resign immediately if the serious allegations are found to be well founded.
The ÖVP also expressed criticism: “The FPÖ is showing its radical face again,” said Member of Parliament Martin Engelberg. Although Guggenbichler denies the allegations and the presumption of innocence applies, it remains “remarkable that such accusations appear almost exclusively against politicians of one party: namely against the Kickl-FPÖ”.
