Pack near Rome – wolves killed Lipizzaner foals in breeding

Date:

Four Lipizzan foals have been attacked and killed by wolves at an Italian Ministry of Agriculture farm. A two-month-old foal was mauled, while three others collapsed and died after the attack.

The staff of the CREA breeding farm, located in a former military stud farm in Montelibretti, intervened and drove two wolves to flight, while a third had already escaped. Until now, the stud has never been attacked by a predator.

“Since 1948, the mild climate of the Roman countryside has enabled us to graze the horses all year round: we have been breeding these horses for over 70 years. They are healthy and strong,” emphasizes Luca Buttazzoni, director of CREA. He called for action against the rapidly growing wolf population in the area. They would never have ventured so close to the houses.

Pack of wolves exterminated within a week
The experience of the Apennine region of Abruzzo also shows that living together with large carnivores in central Italy is not always easy. Nine wolves were found dead by rangers last week in the province of L’Aquila, not far from Abruzzo National Park. The animals were said to have been killed with bits of poisoned meat found in the area’s forests. As confirmed by the national park, an entire pack of wolves living in the area was wiped out within a week. The causes of death are now being investigated by experts.

Attack on woman with dog
Wolves are not popular with the locals. A woman has been attacked by a wolf in the small town of Palombaro in Abruzzo. The 56-year-old was walking her dog in the center of the village of 1,000 when the wolf attacked the animal. The woman tried to defend her dog, so the wolf attacked her too. When she fell to the ground, the wolf ran away with the dog in its mouth, she reported. The 56-year-old was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
