About 16 percent of Austrians suffer from an allergy. This is the conclusion of a survey by opinion research institute IMAS, the results of which were presented on Friday. Most are plagued by complaints of pollen, inglorious silver goes into house dust, followed by food, sun and animal allergies. Compared to data from 2019, the problems due to pollen and especially dust have increased the most.
According to the study, which personally interviewed 1,008 people over the age of 16 in April, women are more affected than men: 20 percent of female subjects, but only 12 percent of male subjects, reported having an allergy. Urban residents (18 percent) are more likely to suffer from it than the rural population (13 percent).
Pollen as a leader among triggers
Half of the reported allergy sufferers complained of only one allergy, over a quarter of two and a fifth of three or four. 51 percent of those affected suffer from the pollen, 27 percent from house dust mites, 17 percent from a food allergy or intolerance and 13 percent react with symptoms to sunlight or animals.
Compared to a 2019 survey, the proportion of allergy sufferers in the total population has remained the same. However, the type of intolerance has shifted: four years ago, about 14 percent of those affected had symptoms of house dust, now it is 27 percent, so almost double. At that time, pollen already caused problems for 43 percent of people with an allergy, recently this was already 51 percent, and the sun is also increasingly causing reactions. Drug and animal allergies, on the other hand, are decreasing.
