After a five-hour highway blockade organized by the Extinction Rebellion group, police intervened with low-intensity water cannons.
Nearly 1,600 people have been arrested and 40 of them will face charges public disorder after the huge blockade carried out on Saturday by environmental activists and environmental sympathizers on the A12 near The Hague, the police report.
Most of the detainees are free, while the defendants will be charged with verbal assaults against authority or damage to public property during this action organized by the group Rebellion of ExtinctionExtinction Rebellion members, accompanied by thousands of supporters and environmental defenders, blocked the A12 for five hours, from around noon to around 5pm, to demonstrate against subsidies to the fossil fuel industrythe NOS chain reports.
Eventually the police intervened low intensity water cannon. The demonstrators, warned of this action, appeared on the highway in swimsuits, bikinis and other summer clothes.
A protester has been arrested for biting a cop, but there is no record of other types of physical incidents in a concentration that the police themselves have recognized as fundamentally peaceful.
