Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez dissolves parliament and has scheduled new elections for July 23. He reacted to the results of the regional elections on Sunday, he declared somewhat remorseful on Monday. The ruling left-wing alliance around Sanchez’s socialist party PSOE suffered a major setback.
Spain swung right in Sunday’s regional and local elections. The conservative People’s Party (PP) gained significant votes in both the autonomous regions and many municipalities. This prompts Sanchez to take his drastic step.
Sanchez party no longer the strongest force
After counting more than 98.5 percent of the vote nationwide, the PP came out with a nice 31.5 percent. That is more than nine percentage points more than in the last elections in 2019. This replaced the socialist PSOE as the strongest force at the local level.
The right-wing populist Vox achieved only more than seven percent in the rural municipalities – but that is an increase of more than four percentage points. The PP could depend on Vox in many municipalities and cities. The PSOE came in at a good 28 percent, losing more than a percentage point.
