Dangerous situation Sunday afternoon on Lake Hallstatt in Upper Austria: a sailing boat with two people capsized in strong gusts of wind. The two sailors had to wait for rescue in the water, which was only ten degrees Celsius cold.
On Whit Sunday afternoon, a sailboat with two people – a 55-year-old couple from Traun – was sailing on Lake Hallstättersee when suddenly strong wind gusts occurred and the boat capsized. The two sailors then fell into Lake Hallstatt, which was only ten degrees cold.
All people saved
An eyewitness immediately made a distress call and the rescue chain was set in motion. Boat crews from the FF Bad Goisern and the water rescue service Hallstatt and Bad Goisern rushed to the scene of the accident, where they had already been informed by the police. The two people were taken out of the water by the crew of the ÖWR boat Hallstatt, taken ashore and handed over to the rescue service and fire doctor for treatment.
Difficult salvage of the boat
The subsequent recovery of the capsized boat proved much more difficult: as it was not possible to get it right in the conventional way, two lifting bags had to be attached by fire divers from the Traunkirchen diving base. In cooperation with the ÖWR-Boot Bad Goisern it was finally possible to get the boat back in order. The hull was pumped out with a submersible pump before towing the boat ashore.
